Dry Cleaning Certifications: What Do They Mean For You?

Have you ever noticed a decal attached to your cleaner’s store window stating that he or she is a Certified Environmental Drycleaner and have wondered what this means?
The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), formerly known as the International Fabricare Institute (IFI), has been the premier international trade association for garment care professionals since 1883. They promote the environmentally safe operation of drycleaning establishments by formally recognizing individuals who fulfill a predetermined set of requirements. Successful candidates earn the right to use the title “Certified Environmental Drycleaner” (CED).

What is a CED – Certified Environmental Drycleaner

In order to become a CED, an individual must pass a standard examination and make a commitment to become recertified every three years. Frequent recertification is necessary, due to the constantly changing rules and regulations designed to protect both the environment and the public. The drycleaner is tested on various environmental topics, including environmental regulations, proper waste handling, occupational safety and health, safe operation of drycleaning equipment, and other Federal regulatory requirements. We believe that one of the primary ways of promoting an environmentally safe drycleaning operation is to develop and demonstrate the highest level of knowledge and expertise in this area. Certification helps legitimize this process by professionally testing the drycleaners’ knowledge and skills.

Why DLI Endorses Environmental Certification

DLI’s Certified Environmental Drycleaner program is designed to benefit drycleaners, their customers, and their communities. This program focuses on the drycleaners’ awareness of environmental laws and regulations as they pertain to the drycleaning industry. Improving the environment that we live in requires drycleaners to fully understand and comply with numerous environmental regulations and controls in order to promote and ensure the continued health and safety of businesses, families, and their communities.

What Can You Expect From a Certified Environmental Drycleaner?

*Proven knowledge regarding environmental regulation, proper waste handling,
occupational safety and health, the safe operation of drycleaning equipment, and other Federal requirements.

* Adherence to the “Professional Standards of Certified Drycleaners.”
* An awareness of environmental laws and regulations as they pertain to the drycleaning industry.
